PIERRE, S.D  -    Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today a group of stakeholders have been asked to participate in a workgroup to discuss the current consumer protection statutes, specifically the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, SDCL 37-24. The current consumer protection laws were enacted in 1971 with some revisions throughout the years.

“Last year alone, the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division assisted over twenty thousand consumers in recovering over $11 million,” said Jackley. “The Consumer Protection stakeholders have been tasked to use their diverse experience to better protect and serve both South Dakota consumers and businesses.”

The workgroup is comprised of legislators, state and local government agencies, law enforcement, private business owners and various associations who all have a stake in strengthening the consumer protection laws.

The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Attorney General’s Office located at the George S. Mickelson Criminal Justice Center, 1302 East Hwy 14, Pierre, South Dakota, 9:00 a.m. (CST). This meeting is open to the public.
