Accreditation

Scope of Accreditation

Quality Assurance Standards for forensic DNA testing laboratories and forensic DNA databasing labs were established by the DNA Advisory Board and issued by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in October of 1998 and April of 1999 respectively. These standards describe the quality practices necessary to ensure the quality and integrity of the data and the competency of the laboratory.

The DNA services of the Forensic Lab have been audited by ANSI National Accreditation Board and found to be in compliance with the quality assurance standards for forensic DNA testing labs and forensic DNA databasing labs. Each year the SDFL participates in either an external or internal audit. As part of the QAS, each DNA examiner is required to attend at least 8 hours of continuing education each year and is required to participate in proficiency testing each year. All reports undergo technical review and administrative review before being issued.
