State v. Darrell Hoadley
Darrell Hoadley was convicted for the brutal beating death of Chester Allan Poage in rural Lawrence County. This is the same murder for which Briley Piper and Elijah Page were also convicted. The jury did not recommend the death penalty for Hoadley, so he was sentenced to life without parole. In addition to the murder conviction, Hoadley was also convicted of Robbery, Kidnapping, Burglary and Grand Theft.
Hoadley appealed his convictions to the South Dakota Supreme Court. After hearing oral arguments and receiving written briefs, the South Dakota Supreme Court affirmed Hoadley's convictions in mid-2002. No further proceedings have been brought as of November 15, 2004. Hoadley will, in absence of a commutation of sentence or other unanticipated proceedings, spend the rest of his life in prison. There is no possibility of parole.
