State Sues MedPlan, Inc.

(Pierre) – Chief Deputy Attorney General Larry Long announced today that the state has filed a lawsuit against MedPlan, Inc., a Delaware based corporation, for engaging in deceptive trade practices.

“These guys will call you up and pitch their medical discount plan. They’ll offer to send you information, and request your checking account number for verification. Once they’ve got that number, they’ll make a withdrawal from the account and impose a forced membership,” said Long.

The state is seeking injunction relief, restitution for the victims, and damages. No court date has been set.

“We’re not going to stand for this kind of illicit activity in South Dakota. Part of the Attorney General’s job is to protect the people of South Dakota and that’s what we’re going to do with this lawsuit,” said Long.

The state has received 12 complaints on MedPlan. MedPlan is also being investigated by several other states.

If you have been contacted or billed by MedPlan, please contact the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-300-1986.
