Investigation Completed in Charles Mix County Officer Involved Shooting


PIERRE, S.D  -  Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation has completed its investigation into the Officer Involved Shooting incident in Charles Mix County that occurred October 30, 2014. No injuries occurred as a result of the rounds fired by the Deputy and the investigative report will be turned over to the Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office for agency review, no shooting summary will be issued.

The Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call to service near Dante early on the morning of October 30, 2014.  Upon arriving at the scene, a deputy approached a vehicle that was occupied by two individuals. The incident escalated and resulted in a Charles Mix County Deputy firing rounds at the vehicle. The vehicle then left the scene at a high rate of speed.  The passenger of the vehicle, a juvenile, was located shortly after the incident with injuries not sustained from gunfire. 

Russell Duaine Turner Jr., 40, Dante, was arrested on Thursday, October 30th without incident on outstanding warrants including intentional damage to property, failure to appear or report felony and driving with a suspended license. In addition, Turner has been arrested and charged for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, class 2 felony punishable by up to 25 years imprisonment and/or $50,000 fine, distribution of controlled substance to a minor, methamphetamine, class 2 felony, punishable by up to 25 years imprisonment and/or $50,000 fine, possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, class 5 felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment and/or $10,000 fine, ingestion, class 5 felony, punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment and/or $10,000 and possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor. 

Turner is presumed innocent until such time as proven guilty.
