Attorney General’s Office to Review Officer Involved Shooting in Lawrence County
PIERRE, S.D – Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at approximately 11:20 a.m. MST.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded to a request for help from the New Castle Police Department in locating a stolen vehicle, which was believed to be heading towards the South Dakota border. Lawrence County deputies located the vehicle and a pursuit ensued near Rochford Road and U.S. Highway 14A, south of Lead. The subject’s vehicle came to a dead end and the pursuit continued on foot. The incident escalated with the subject firing shots at the deputies and resulted in return fire by the deputies and shooting the armed subject.

The male subject identified as Rory Lynn Gunderman, 31, Sundance, WY, was transported to a local hospital and later died.

At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for a final determination on the officer’s action. The release of the summary is anticipated within 30 days.
