PIERRE, S.D. –  Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that a State Penitentiary inmate Dustin Vincent Piatt, 35, pled guilty today to Possession of a Weapon by an Inmate, SDCL 24 2 14(3), a Class 2 felony, from an incident occurring last May in the Penitentiary.   The weapon was a shank approximately 7 inches long, sharpened, with shoe laces wrapped around it for a grip.    Piatt was sentenced as well and received a 7 year penitentiary sentence to run concurrent to the offense he is currently serving.

“Recognizing our prison system’s dual role of punishment with the opportunity for rehabilitation, inmates are expected to follow the prison rules and the law.  I want to thank the prison staff for the dangerous work they do and for their assistance during this investigation,” said Jackley.

This case was investigated by Special Security at the Penitentiary and DCI and prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
