PIERRE, S.D.  – Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that Ronald Wayne Whalen, 47, Sioux Falls, was sentenced on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 for attempted grand theft by deception. Whalen was sentenced to 2.5 years and will run concurrent to a sentence he received in June 2017 on a forgery conviction. 
Charges stem from an incident in July 2017, where Whalen told a fictitious story to the elderly victim in order to obtain money.
This case was investigated and prosecuted by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation Subdivision.
