Barnett Announces Consumer E-mail Alerts

(Pierre) – Attorney General Mark Barnett announced today the beginning of his office’s Consumer E-mail Alerts. "This program will allow South Dakota consumers to sign-up for periodic consumer protection alerts delivered to their e-mail account," Barnett said. "It will also help us communicate more effectively with South Dakota consumers."

The Division of Consumer Protection handles thousands of consumer complaints and inquiries each year. As part of their duties, they also seek to prevent consumer scams by educating South Dakota consumers through periodic news releases, consumer handbooks, and presentations to community groups.

"We continue to seek better ways to educate consumers of current scams and prevention techniques," Barnett said. "We believe it’s time to use modern technology to help combat some of the many scam artists targeting South Dakotans."

Consumers interested in receiving the Consumer E-mail Alerts are encouraged to sign-up by going to the Attorney General’s website, located at www.state.sd.us/atg. Consumers may also sign-up for the alerts by sending an email to consumerhelp@state.sd.us.

Additionally, South Dakota consumers may still contact the Division of Consumer Protection via the consumer hotline at 1-800-300-1986.
