Supreme Court Reject Inmate’s Appeal on Victim Mutilation Case

PIERRE, S.D.- Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that an Oregon man’s appeal to the South Dakota Supreme Court was summarily rejected. Jason Paul Wood, an inmate at the South Dakota State Penitentiary, was convicted of the July 27, 2007, assault of another inmate. Wood tied up the victim and severely beat him. Wood then attempted to strangle the victim by placing a ligature around his neck. The assault culminated with the mutilation of the victim by Wood chewing the victim’s ear off and consuming it.

Wood received a 20 year sentence that ran consecutive to the sentence he is currently serving. Wood appealed to the South Dakota Supreme Court, and his appeal was rejected on the grounds that it had no merit.

The appeal was handled by the Attorney General’s Office.
