Attorney General’s Office to Review Officer Involved Shooting in Custer County

 

PIERRE, S.D. –    Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred September 6, 2011. The incident occurred at 6th Street and Mt. Rushmore Road in Custer, South Dakota. The 22 year-old suspect involved in the shooting has died from gunshot wounds.
                                          
Custer County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to call for service that resulted in a short vehicle pursuit and a collision by the shooting suspect into the Custer County Sheriff’s Office. The incident escalated and resulted in South Dakota Highway Patrol Officer Todd Albertson shooting the suspect.
 
At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General, Custer County State’s Attorney and the Custer County Sheriff’s Office for a final determination on the officers’ actions. The release of the summary report is anticipated within 30 days.
