Officer Involved Shooting in Beresford


Pierre, S.D. – Attorney General Marty J. Jackley and Beresford Chief of Police confirm that on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at approximately 12:07 p.m., a Beresford Police Officer responded to a call for service at a residence located at 101 N. 13th Street, Beresford.

Preliminary reports indicate Sgt. Steckelberg arrived at the scene and observed a male subject exit the front door and approach him with a gun. The officer drew his weapon and shot the subject.

The male subject was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The injured subject has been identified as Christopher Lee Heuer, 21, Sioux Falls.

Sgt. Steckelberg and all other occupants of the house were not injured in the confrontation.

Sgt. Steckelberg has been placed on administrative leave.

The investigation into this event has been turned over to the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and further inquiries regarding the investigation will be referred to the South Dakota Attorney General's Office.
