PIERRE, S.D – Attorney General Marty Jackley and Campbell County Sheriff Lacey Perman confirm today they have concluded their investigation into the death of Mark Dean Bechtold, 53, Herreid.
Campbell County Sheriff Perman was at the Bechtold residence enforcing an ordinance complaint on November 10, 2016.  During the enforcement of the ordinance, Sheriff Perman and three contracted employees heard one gunshot round coming from a location outside the Bechtold residence. The Sheriff and the other individuals retreated to their vehicles. Shortly after, an additional round was fired.  Upon further investigation by the Sheriff, Bechtold was found dead outside his residence.
An autopsy was conducted and confirmed that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound and ruled a suicide.
