Drug Store Burglary Being Investigated

PIERRE, S.D.- Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that a burglary of the Zeeb Drug Store in Philip, South Dakota, has led to an investigation by the Division of Criminal Investigation, Haakon County Sheriff’s Office, and the Philip Police Department. The incident took place in the late evening hours of December 1st or the early hour of December 2, 2009. Large amounts of scheduled narcotics such as Oxycodone, Demerol and Fentanyl were taken by the intruder along with other merchandise.

“Prescription drug abuse is on the rise in South Dakota," said Jackley. "The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation has experienced a tripling of prescription drug investigations since 2007, also attributing to an increase in violent crimes."  Jackley is suggesting that "citizens can assist law enforcement by 'properly' disposing of any expired or unnecessary prescription drugs in their home especially where young children are concerned.  If the criminals are desperate enough to target pharmacies they may also target private homes."
