Medicaid Fraud, Abuse, and Neglect Services
Medicaid Fraud
Healthcare providers who engage in fraudulent billing practices are costing the citizens of South Dakota. Medicaid FANS investigates and prosecutes healthcare providers accused of defrauding the state’s Medicaid Program.
Generally, Medicaid fraud occurs when a healthcare provider submits a claim to the state’s Medicaid Program that they know, or should have known, is false. While Medicaid fraud can take many forms, the most common scheme involves healthcare providers submitting claims for services not performed.
Abuse and Neglect
Our most vulnerable citizens, the elderly, sick, and disabled, deserve special protections. Medicaid FANS investigates and prosecutes cases where these populations have suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of their caretakers.
Abuse and neglect by a caretaker can happen in healthcare facilities and in private homes. Abuse by a caretaker may be sexual, physical, or emotional; it may also involve financial exploitation. Neglect by a caretaker involves a failure to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, or medical care.
