Newell Couple Arrested on Multiple Counts of Child Abuse

PIERRE, S.D  -  Attorney General Marty Jackley and Butte County States Attorney Heather Plunkett said today that Wendel Reed Hiland Jr., 51, Newell and Jessica Hiland, 31, Newell, were charged and arrested by complaint on Thursday, October 17, 2013. Both are charged with 30 counts of abuse of a minor child, class 4 felonies. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment and/or $25,000 fine. An initial appearance hearing has been scheduled today at 2:30 pm in Butte County.
Charges stem from incidents that occurred in a Newell residence from August through October 2013.
Wendel R. Hiland and Jessica Hiland are presumed innocent until such time as proven guilty.
