Criminal Investigation into Kent Davidson’s Death at State Penitentiary
PIERRE, S.D – Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that on Monday September 8, 2014, Kent Davidson, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of Crystal Schulz, was found deceased in his cell at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. As standard procedure, the South Dakota Department of Correction has requested the Attorney General’s Office and Division of Criminal Investigation to review the matter for any potential foul play. The Attorney General further confirms that on today’s date the death certificate has been released stating cause and manner of death to be asphyxia and ligature strangulation by homicide.
“The circumstances surrounding Davidson’s death do not present a further danger to the public, correction officers or other inmates. It is important for investigators to thoroughly review all of the facts and evidence to better ensure that an appropriate and informed charging decision is made,” said Jackley.
