Lyman County Women Indicted in Murder Case

Lyman County Women Indicted in Murder Case


PIERRE, S.D.-  Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today Whitney Renae Turney, 27, Oacoma and Dayna Wells, 27, Oacoma, were indicted yesterday by a Lyman County grand jury. Turney was indicted on one count of second degree murder, class B felony, penalty is a mandatory life sentence. Wells was indicted on one count of accessory to a crime, class 5 felony, penalty of up to 5 years in the state penitentiary and/or $10,000 fine and one count of misprision of a felony, class 1 misdemeanor.

The indictment charged that on or around September 4, 2015, Turney murdered Calvin J. Shields and Wells assisted her in the attempt to conceal, destroy or alter evidence.

Turney and Wells are presumed innocent until such time as proven guilty.
 
Agencies that assisted in this investigation include the Chamberlain Police Department, Brule County Sheriff’s Office, Lyman County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs, South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Division of Criminal Investigation.

This case is being prosecuted by the Lyman County States Attorney and the Attorney General’s Office.
