PIERRE, S.D. – Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred July 31, 2017 at approximately 1:29 p.m (MDT).  The incident occurred at 701 Halsey Drive, Box Elder.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was doing a warrant check at a Box Elder residence, when the situation escalated resulting in the deputy firing a duty weapon at the subject.   The male subject identified as Cruz Louis Deleon, 21, Rapid City, was transported to a local hospital.
At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for a final determination on the officer’s action. The release of the summary is anticipated within 30 days.
