PIERRE, S.D. – Attorney General Marty Jackley and the Division of Criminal Investigation today released the summary into the shooting of Jason Wayne Traversie, 44, Box Elder, on May 2, 2018, in Box Elder, South Dakota. The Division of Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation at the request of the Box Elder Police Department.
The incident occurred on May 2, when law enforcement responded to a domestic violence incident at a Box Elder residence, when the situation escalated resulting in the officer firing a duty weapon at the subject.
“It is my conclusion as Attorney General that Officer John Cargill was justified in firing his weapon and using lethal force. I would like to thank the Box Elder Police Department and the Officer for their service and complete cooperation in this investigation,” stated Attorney General Jackley.
