PIERRE, S.D. –  Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that a State Penitentiary inmate, James Patrick Dornbusch, 25, was convicted by a Minnehaha County Jury of 4 counts of simple assault against a department of corrections employee, class 6 felony, punishable by up to two years in the state penitentiary and/or $4,000 fine.
The charges stemmed from an incident on September 20, 2016, where Dornbusch assaulted two correctional officers.
“Recognizing our prison system’s dual role of punishment with the opportunity for rehabilitation, inmates are expected to follow the prison rules and the law.  I want to thank the prison staff for the dangerous work they do and for their assistance during this investigation,” said Jackley.
This case was investigated by Special Security at the Penitentiary and Division of Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
