Attorney General's Office to Review Officer Involved Shooting in Union County

PIERRE, S.D. – Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred Sunday, September 16, 2018, at approximately 10:00 p.m. (CDT). 

 

Vermillion Police Department responded to a call to service at a Vermillion residence that resulted in a short vehicle pursuit. Vermillion Police Department discontinued the pursuit when speeds increased in a residential neighborhood.  Shortly after, a South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop when the situation escalated resulting in the Trooper firing a duty weapon at the subject.  

 

The male subject identified as Kuong Gatluak, 21, Vermillion. was transported to a local hospital.

 

At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for a final determination on the officer’s action. The release of the summary is anticipated within 30 days.
