PIERRE, S.D. – Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at approximately 3:05 p.m. (CDT).
The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance at the Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls. The incident escalated, resulting in the suspect breaking a window in the door of the jail and then charging law enforcement while armed with a knife. This resulted in a Sheriff’s Deputy firing a duty weapon at the subject.
The male subject was transported to an area hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.
At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for a final determination on the officer’s action. The release of the summary is anticipated within 30 days.
