PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley warns citizens to be cautious when considering purchasing products or services through a door-to-door sale.
“During the summer months, residents may encounter someone at their door who is looking to sell a product or a service especially with the recent storms and flooding. Residents should be cautious about high-pressure sales pitches and don’t rush into committing without first checking things out,” said Attorney General Jackley.
The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division offers these tips when approached with a purchase.
- Avoid high-pressure sales tactics; don’t rush into buying anything.
- Check for ID Information such as revenue license and proof of insurance/or bond to ensure they are licensed to do business in South Dakota.
- Ask for references – and check those references.
- Compare prices, ask for quotes from local businesses.
- Be aware of false claims.
- Keep copy of final bill or contract.
- Make final payment only after work is completed and consumer verifies that product suppliers have been paid.
- Pay by check to the business, not an individual. Avoid on-the-spot cash payments.
