PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley recognizes the South Dakota Forensic Lab in celebration of this week being National Forensic Science Week.

“The Attorney General’s Forensic Lab is relied upon by federal authorities and state prosecutors to test evidence needed for their cases,” said Attorney General Jackley. “Our Lab is a national leader thanks to the outstanding work done by our staff.”

The South Dakota Forensic Lab (SDFL) provides scientific services to all law enforcement agencies in the state, including federal and tribal agencies, at no cost. The lab has 20 full time employees disciplined in four different areas; DNA/Serology, Fingerprint, Firearms/Toolmark and Evidence Intake. The lab is nationally accredited.

Lab staff in 2025 received over 14,500 items of evidence and completed 3,425 cases in 2025. SDFL also manages the South Dakota Offender DNA database and to date, there are approximately 99,038 offender DNA profiles in South Dakota’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
