PIERRE, S.D.- Attorney General Marty Jackley said today that the State of South Dakota has purchased Sodium Thiopental, one of the drugs used in the state’s lethal injection protocol, in response to reported national shortages of the drug. South Dakota has acquired sufficient quantities for the drug to carry out the death sentences of the two inmates currently in the custody of the South Dakota Department of Corrections for capital crimes. Donald E. Moeller and Charles Russell Rhines have appeals pending and no execution date has been set for either inmate.
