PIERRE, S.D.- South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred on April 6, 2011. The incident occurred at 6248 Blake Road in Pennington County. The 43 year-old suspect involved in the shooting has died from gunshot wounds.
Pennington County Sheriff’s Office dispatched Deputy Ed Johnson to a traffic complaint at 6248 Blake Road. Once Deputy Johnson was on scene he attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle in question. While at the residence, the deputy heard a gunshot from a detached garage located on the property. Deputy Johnson then entered the garage and was confronted by a male subject carrying a scoped rifle and a handgun. The incident escalated and resulted in Deputy Johnson firing his duty weapon striking the subject.
At the completion of the investigation, the Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General, Pennington County State’s Attorney, and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office for final determination on the officer’s actions.
