Attorney General’s Office to Review Officer Involved Shooting in Rapid City
PIERRE, S.D. – Attorney General Marty Jackley confirms that the Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Rapid City Police Department, is investigating the officer involved shooting that occurred January 10, 2012. The incident took place at the Lacrosse Street exit in Rapid City, South Dakota. The suspect, James Baker, 41, Box Elder has been admitted to the hospital for gunshot wounds.
The incident began with a traffic stop by a Rapid City Police Officer. The incident escalated with a vehicle pursuit which ended at the Lacrosse Street exit and resulted in officers firing their duty weapons striking Baker.
At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General, Rapid City Police Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol for a final determination on the officers’ actions. The release of the summary report is anticipated within 30 days.
