In accordance with SDCL Chapter 23-3-71, the Law Enforcement Officers Training and Standards Commission, in consultation with the SD Department of Health, has established a training program for county coroners.
All newly selected county coroners must attend a 16-hour training program within one year of appointment. This training focuses on (1) Death scene investigation and (2) Death registration. Law Enforcement Training will coordinate this training annually.
All incumbent county coroners must complete 8 hours of advanced or refresher training every two years in the following subject areas:
- Death scene investigation and
- Death registration.
Coroners are required to submit a letter certifying they have completed the 8 hours of training to the commission through Law Enforcement Training by December 31st of the following years: 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024, 2026, 2028, etc.
Coroners are also required to maintain a record of the training and to make the records available to the commission upon request.
